Independent Dementia Advocacy
for
Residents in West Kent Only
Some people with dementia have difficulty representing their own interests.
They can feel powerless, unable to put forward their own views or to speak
out. They may have difficulty communicating their needs and wishes. They
can be faced with disadvantages and discrimination.
An Advocate will:
• Represent the person’s views as if
they were their own
• Protect their rights and entitlements to services
• Will not be able to give advice
• Help them make their own decisions and choices
The Advocate’s aim is to ensure the person
has the opportunity to participate in decisions made about them.
Should the person with dementia lack the capacity,
then everything that is done for them should be done in their best interests.
It is important that their human rights are not being breached and that
they remain central to any and all decisions made.
Referrals to this free service are done by telephone.
They can be made by anyone who is concerned for someone, with Dementia,
who is not being listened to or not receiving the services to which they
are entitled to and needs someone to speak up for them on their behalf.
THIS SERVICE WILL BE PARTLY-OPERATIONAL
IN JUNE 2010 AND FULLY OPERATIONAL IN JULY 2010 AND IS CURRENTLY ONLY AVAILABLE
FOR RESIDENTS IN WEST KENT
